At the Sixth Annual White Cashmere Collection 2009: Fashion with Compassion Show, an event that trotted out a bevy of models decked in designer ensembles crafted from Cashmere Bathroom Tissue. Held in Toronto on Sept. 23, the two-ply-feting event marked the return of Cashmere’s limited-edition Pink Roll, these fashions were all dreamed up in honor of Breast Cancer Month and made even more of a splash than they had hoped!Bravo!

GDC 09 Call for entries
deadline：October 16th 2009

GDC is the first large-sized synthetic global design competition in China， which is held every two years.

It grew out from Graphic Design in China, which is found by Shenzhen Graphic Design Association in 1992. In 2009, GDC has been extended and restructured, which will show a fresh attitude. Compared with the past, GDC 09 is more comprehensive, professional, authority and interesting; and it will give a big surprise to all designers who concern about the GDC.

GDC 09 includes competition, forum, lecture, award ceremony, series of exhibitions, publish and other activities. The category of competition covers graphic design, advertising, interactive media, product design and environmental design. It will become the most influence, the highest level, the best comprehensive, the most authoritative and fair design biennial competition in the Asian-Pacific region.

The working direction of GDC 09 is to break single design barriers, choose brave and innovative design, nurture new design force. GDC 09 aims to popularize public design knowledge, enhance social role of design, strengthen designers’ sense of honor and allow more interactive between design and society.

Rules of GDC09 Competition

Professional:
All the entries must have been printed and published between 5th October 2007 and 16th October 2009, in any country. Entries can be submitted by any company or individual in the creation or production of the work. All the winning entries will be included in GDC Annual 09.

Students:
Students currently enrolled in undergraduate graduate, and continuing education programs in advertising, visual communication, graphic design, photography, illustration, new media, product, architecture and space are eligible for the competition, and are invited to submit published or unpublished work in any category.

Students’ works will be discussed and elected separately, but criteria and jury will be the same with profession works. Students can choose register online, also can be collected by school. All the winning entries will be included in GDC Annual 09.

Participants can submit entries in their own wishes, without limited number. Any works jury member take part in will be automatically excluded from the competition.

Red dot award: design concept 2008 in education section, by designer Maja Mesic. Most of the drawing tools available now are primarily created for writing, and are not suitably adapted to drawing. And we are familiar with their normal shape. Today we introduced this special drawing tools design concept called Alatka, as opposed to the restrictive form of pencil-shaped drawing tools. Alatka’s ergonomic form has been devised to allow a more natural and expressive approach to drawing.

If you want to colour a surface, one needs to fill the surface with lots of lines, which may takes a lot of time. However, Alatka presents an innovative approach to drawing with a form that can adapt to drawing lines as well as coloured surfaces. With its tear-drop form, it allows the wrist to be free without having to conform to the movements dictated by other more restrictive shapes. The user is able to naturally use Alatka and position the hand as they wish. The movement of the wrist is more fluid and thus, the user is able to achieve balance and stability by easily adapting to its form.

Nendo from Japan, created Blown Fabric at exhibition Tokyo Fiber ‘09 Senseware in Milan later this month, which intended to convey the possibilities of new materials developed with Japanese synthetic fibre technology.

They explained: ‘Smash’ is a specialized long-fibre non-woven polyester that can be manipulated into different forms through hot press forming technology. Because it is thermoplastic, light and rip-proof, but glows beautifully when light passes through it, we wanted to create lighting fixtures in the style of vernacular Japanese chochin paper lanterns with it.

The structure of standard chochin consists of thin strips of bamboo wrapped around a wood frame and strengthened with vertical stitching. Japanese mulberry paper pasted over the frame completes the lamps, and gives them their characteristic glow. But we realized that Smash’s particular properties would allow us to shape it like blown glass into a seamless one-piece lantern. It is impossible to completely control the process, so each fixture takes a unique form as heat is added and pressurized air blown into it. As in glass-blowing, we can intervene during the production of each piece, resulting in a collection of objects whose infinitely varied imperfections are reminiscent of the infinite formal mutations of viruses and bacteria in response to environmental changes, and a far cry from the standardized forms of industrial mass-production.

The fixtures are weighted at the base by the light source. This simple, straightforward contrasts with the careful selection of materials. Smash changes form if the interior temperature rises above 80 degrees centigrade, so we mounted low-heat LED bulbs in machined aluminium sockets that double as a heat-sink to maintain a low interior temperature.”

The “air ravioli” deriving from the packaging sector, the lightweight stainless steel mesh of the industrial filters, and the materials in recycled fibres used in construction or for the transportation of sugar, grains or stones are extremely low-cost and high-pressure technical materials, which never cease to amaze and impress with their practical and appealing results. A fine example is the strong white fabric with distanced warps and wefts in black carbon threads (originally used as earthing for electrostatic currents), which has produced indestructible and surprisingly elegant padded furniture.

Red dot award: design concept 2008 in education section, by designer Park Jinsun. It is a pen that enables natural colours to be scanned and instantly used for drawing. The scanner capable of defining the color of the original object that transmits information to a chip that controls the mixing ink cartridges from three (RGB) to get accurate color.

The colors are from the things around us, natural or artificial, all took from our environment. It displays an infinite and diverse range of beautiful colors. The pen is placed against an object and the user presses the colour scan button. The colour sensor detects the colour and displays it on the colour display. The RGB cartridge located within the pen mixes the inks to create the colour scanned.

Red dot award: design concept 2008, CUT designed by Kang Hyo Jin. A new way to cut the tape which don’t need your scissors anymore. It features as portable, adjustable and easy to use. It embodies a simple combination of ideas – the knife blade, the flexible tag and a wrist band. The rubber implement has a serrated blade edge and an adjustable locking system with a simple interlocking arrowhead. The concept is like a watch, to use CUT , it is simply wrapped around the roll of tape and locked into position to fit. Lengths of tape are easily torn off with the blade edge. The adjustable band length allows CUT to remain a snug fit on the roll as it is used up.
